Draft 2011 General Fund Budget (revised)

For a copy of the draft 2011 General Fund budget that includes several changes from the previous drafts presented to the City Council on March 22 and March 29, please find that document here.

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, several City positions are eliminated: three patrol officers, two Public Works laborers, the Community Development Director, and two part-time positions. An additional position, dispatcher, will not be re-filled following a scheduled December retirement. In total, this budget reflects a 28% reduction in City staff. This has been a difficult budget to prepare and present to the community. If you have any questions related to the proposed General Fund budget, please contact a City Hall representative.

Community Survey

The results of the survey prepared by the City, Davison Township and the Davison Community School District, in cooperation with Oakland University as a class project, will be presented at the April 26 City Council meeting. Representatives from Davison Township and Davison Community Schools will be invited to the meeting to hear what the public had to say about local government and this communiy's quality of life. Following the presentation at the City Council meeting, the results and a summary will be posted online and provided to the other governments for their use and distribution, as well. If you participated in the survey, thank you for taking the time to complete and return the surveys. Your comments are gratefully appreciated.

2010 Compost Site

Due to two different factors, the City's Compost Site will not be opening this year. First, the City was  notified as far back as 2006 that the use of park property acquired with the assistance of grant funding for compost operations did not meet the State's definition of "outdoor recreation," for which the grant funding was awarded. Failure to mitigate (remove) the compost operations from the park property, according to the State, could either jeopardize future grant awards or result in the City having to return the grant funds. This compliance with the State's directives is the primary reason for not opening the compost site. Another factor in this decision is the cost of compost operations, especially when considered in light of the City's current budget constraints. Seasonal laborers hired to staff the compost site and the cost of grinding and screening the brush have been eliminated from the proposed 2010-2011 budget. City staff is working with the City's solid waste hauler to begin collecting all yard waste from the curb of all residents. This collection should begin later this month.

School Board Election- May 4

The City of Davison will conduct an election for the Davison Community Schools on May 4, 2010. This election is for members of the Davison Community Schools Board of Education. The polling place is the same as it is for all City elections: the First Baptist Church, 208 E. Fourth Street. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Two names appear on the ballot for the two seats available: Mr. Mark McGlashen and Mr. Douglas Theodoroff. Absentee ballots for this election should be available from the City Clerk by mid-April. Excercise your right to vote!

2010 Census

You should have received your Census forms. As of late March, approximately 40% of Davison residents had returned the completed forms. If you have not, please take the time to complete the Census. Since this national count is only conducted once every ten years, it is critical that area residents get counted. The results from the Census are used for a variety of purposes, from assigning U.S. Congressional seats to funding numerous governmental programs. A more detailed explanation of the Census and a copy of the Census form can be found here.

Parcel for the Park

Mr. Bob Callis, with the assistance of his family and others, will host his signature fundraising event for "A Parcel for the Park" on May 1, 2010. This event offers a 5k run, a 5k walk, and a half-mile trot for children. Last year's inaugural event was a remarkable success, bringing so many exceptional people from this community and elsewhere together for the first time. Some wonderful memories were created and additional funds were raised as approximately 400 participants followed the trails in the Abernathy Regional Park as runners or walkers. As a show of support for Mr. Callis' efforts, the City Council provided some logistic support by manning the water tables on the route. This year's event should attract an even larger and more enthusiastic crowd. Registration information can be found here.

Thank you, Mr. Callis, to you and your family, for your continuing efforts to enhance your community.

FOR ITS RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES, the officials and employees of the City of Davison will endeavor to instill public trust and confidence in local government, to deliver exceptional municipal services, and to secure and enhance the quality of life associated with community values.
